Abstract
Telematics - synergy of telecommunications and information- is a foundation of modern information society. It enables services, which are changing the paradigm of personal life, industry, and connection to the world. The company Ultra and UM-FERI Maribor, the founder of the program Telematics, have combined their development and marketing goals on one side, and research and pedagogic goals on the other side to encourage the research in the field of telecommunication and information, and to accelerate the transfer of knowledge and achievements from the academia to the industry. Our activities are focused on the following three areas: -Extraction, transmission and dissemination of information, where we focus our investigation on multi-dimensional and multi-rate signal processing, statistical methods, modeling, information transmission, remote sensing, information mining, etc. -Life quality and safety, where we research and develop techniques for mobile remote monitoring of the environment, people's health, and mobile interactive information, data and knowledge access. -Services, where we research, and particularly develop system applications for e-payment, traffic management and monitoring, safety and remote learning. These researches and projected activities involving knowledge and service dissemination have multifaceted significance for Slovenia: a. Stable social-economic and cultural development Measured in the world scale, products and services in the field of Telematics are considered to be a market niche with exponential growth. Many Slovene companies build their strategy based on the products or services of Telematics. Their core features are high technology, high added value and fast development. To follow up with those trends, intensive research and continuous development of quality graduate and post-graduate studies are necessary, especially in the science disciplines of Telematics. Also, cultural development benefits from Telematics. New possibilities, from digital to interactive radio and television diffusion, or any multimedia services in general are offered to larger population, enabling them top cultural services. b. Technology development The development of Telematics and its services is based on knowledge and high technology usage. The most important for Slovenia is to keep up with the pace in the world, which is possible with a close relationship in terms of research between the industry and the academics. With such research work, we can stimulate the development of wireless communication devices, systems for extraction, transmission, processing and dissemination of the information. All these devices, knowledge and algorithms directly and indirectly affect the technology development of the country. c. Strengthening national identity and preserving natural and cultural heritage Managing Telematics in today's world divides the nations to those who will preserve and develop their identity and their natural and cultural heritage from those who will more or less be melted into developed societies. Knowledge in general, which is the fundamental component of the products and services of Telematics, is environment friendly; it disseminates knowledge and culture, and raises the quality of life. With the projected establishment of virtual laboratories, digital library and remote sensing center, Telematics will have a direct positive impact on the national entity and its culture.
Significance for science
On field of digital signal processing we achived original scientifically contributions for noise reduction by new sophisticated algorithms, which considers Bandelet and other mentioned WT, and Bayes interferences in Mark-Gauss model in picture classification, anticipation and generating base WT functions. New algorithms for recognition of objects in pictures. On telecommunication area we achived mainly contributions in development of new routing protocols in procedures of self-similarly traffic estimation and simulation techniques such as "system-in-the-loop". We achived important contributions also in intelligent sensoring area where we did with sophisticated protocols connect replication mechanism with routing protocols and graph theory. On remote control field we achived original scientifically results in about control mechanism in telecommunication systems, where we considered statements about robust regulation systems of type and in robe regulation researches type.
Significance for the country
In Slovenia despite research program Telematika nobody occupies so interdisciplinary with these very important research area. Results were acquired with intensive research in past four years in scope of three master degrees and two doctoral degrees show that we are going with world. Knowledge transfer in economy has enabled to some companies new market niches. Use of our knowledge by controlling and reviewing building process of Slovenian highways gave and will give us direct economical effects by one of largest investing exploit in Slovenia. On field of telecommunications important research contributions are achieved knowledge and knowledge transfer on area of development of mobile electronic payment systems, and GPS based Intelligent Transport Management Systems (Systems M-pay, Margento), ), which global trade already, big potential is with renew of army telecommunication industry. We planning development of own specialized communication simulation and program packages SPaRCmosquito, SPaRCsoft where we searched for new partners for their trading.
