Abstract
The research group is concerned mainly with the research, design and simulation of terrestrial and satellite mobile communication systems, wireless broadband access networks and ad hoc networks. Other research activities embrace the development of software tools for simulation of communication systems, provision of services in telecommunication networks and development of distributed environments for computer supported co-operative work and teleworking. In the field of radio communications we are studying adaptive modulation and coding techniques, synchronization and equalization techniques, and techniques to assess the quality of radio channel. We started with the investigation of space-time coding and multiplexing schemes in MIMO wireless systems. In the field of satellite communications we investigate connectionless per-hop traffic class dependant routing. We are considering Real Time, High Throughput and Best Effort traffic classes. The results showed, that the implementation of traffic class dependant routing significantly improves the performance of all three classes regardless of the traffic load. The research results have been published in several international journals. We are studying communication systems based on high altitude platforms. The aim of the research is to design a telecommunication infrastructure based on the high altitude platforms and capable of provision of broadband services from the stratosphere. We are particularly interested in the applications, based on the internet protocol. We are cooperating with Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia in the field of security policy of the Health Insurance Card System of Slovenia. We are studying security issues of smart card access over the Internet. We are studying non-invasive attacks on smart cards techniques and looking for appropriate countermeasures. We are building simulation models and tools enabling design of the elements of next generation networks. Studying advanced algorithms, techniques, and technologies at various layers of OSI model we are identifying key elements which determine limitations and improve efficiency and capability of communication systems. At physical and data link layer we are interested in such algorithms which are spectral efficient while at network layer we are looking mainly for efficient routing taking into account the quality of service requirements. At physical layer we are assessing the performance of algorithms with SPW and MATLAB simulation tools while at network layer we are using OPNET Modeler. We are capable to test and to implement our solutions in DSP, FPGA and ASIC technologies.
Significance for science
Numerous publications in recognized international journals and the cooperation in European projects prove, that the research results are widely interesting. The research results in the field of routing in satellite networks were published in the last three years in the following journals: - IEEE Transactions on aerospace and electronic systems, - IEEE Transaction on on wireless communications, - International journal of satellite communications and networking, - Computer networks. The research results dealing with adaptive modulation and MIMO systems were published in: - IEICE transaction on communications, - Electronic letters, - Wireless communications and mobile computing. The research results contributed to the following European projects in which we were partners: - COST 272 "Packet-Oriented Service Delivery via Satellite", - COST 273 "Towards Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks", - COST 279 "Analysis and Design of Advanced Multiservice Networks Supporting Mobility, Multimedia and Interworking", - COST 290 "Quality of Service in Future Wireless Systems", - CAPANINA, 6FP-IST, "Communications from Aerial Platform Networks delivering Broadband Communications for All", - SatNEx, 6FP-IST, "Satellite Communications Network of Excellence", - SOCRATES/MINERVA, GISAS - Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Applications for Schools.
Significance for the country
The research and development results, relevant to national telecommunication industry, operators and service providers are the following: - specification of requirements for the introduction of advanced services in next generation networks, - automatic service creation and testing in telecommunication networks, - introduction and testing of new methods for improvement of telecommunication systems development, - design of new fixed and mobile national telecommunication networks, - models for the calculation of radio signal coverage, - radio channel modeling, - identification of new techniques for optimal resource allocation, - development of simulation models for packet oriented networks considering new traffic models, traffic classes and quality of service requirements, - design of new traffic class dependant routing algorithms in packet switched networks, - design of new adaptive modulation and coding techniques for variable rate transmission, - estimation of spectral and power efficiency in radio communication systems, - verification of secure mechanisms in telecommunication networks, - research of security, reliability and interoperability issues in telecommunication networks, - design of new environments for teleteaching and teleworking.
