Abstract
The aim of the research program is to investigate complex nano-systems, focusing on nonequilibrium dynamics of new and existing nano-materials, nonperiodic inhomogeneous matter, and biological nanosystems, as well as the relations between their dynamic properties and function.
The program encompasses synthesis of nanomaterials (in particular nanowires and nanotubes based on transition-metal chalcogenides), research of their interaction with organic molecules (e.g., proteins and DNA) via different functionalisation routes, and construction of sensors and related devices using electron beam and tunneling nanolithography techniques.
Dynamical properties of complex nanosystems will be characterised using various physical measurement techniques, ranging from measurements of spin dynamics via magnetic, optical and single-molecule nano-transport measurements to femtosecond spectroscopy studies.
The main strengths of the proposed program are derived from a strong interdisciplinary approach, based on new materials and new research techniques pioneered at the Jozef Stefan Institute, facilitating capitalisation and technology transfer to industry on one hand, while at the same time performing a basic research program at the forefront of science, on the other.
Significance for science
The research program has addressed some of the most pertinent issues in condensed matter physics, nanoscience and materials science. We emphasize that we are proposing to develop new experimental methods, synthesize new materials and perform new theoretical analyses which are of wider significance. We aim to publish our results in journals with high impact factors which require that the results are of wider interest to the scientific community. Our past record shows that we have been quite successful in this respect. New experimental data on non-equilibrium phenomena will be of importance for understanding and modelling the dynamics of charge in new functional materials. it will open new perspectives for designing new smart materials based on selforganization of charge and spin. The synthesis of new materials with new functional properties and enhancement of functionality of present materials is of direct importance to the development of new functional materials science in general.
Significance for the country
Progress in fundamental research serves as a major driving force both for advancing new knowledge and for spurring new technologies. This has been clearly demonstrated by our group following the discovery of new MoSIx molecular wires which has lead to the formation of a spin-off company, and its central role in one EU project. This demonstrated that the interdisciplinary approach which we are following is essential in order to be able to capitalize on new scientific discoveries. The pressure for applications from the spin-off ensures that any direction which might be promising is pursued with rigour. A chronic problem of Slovene industry is the low added value of its products which leads to low wages and social unrest. Raising the technological level of its industry can only be achieved by incorporation of new knoledge into its products which comes with highly qualified and highly trained personnel and othe diverse forms of knowledge transfers. The research program with its targeted basic research in new materials provides training for such personnel. The knowledge generated in this project has made a great contribution to the formation of an environment for introduction of innovative technologies which are a key factor for Slovenia to remain and progress within the circle of socio-economically and culturaly leading nations. Part of proposed project is also the basis for formation of a high-technological company. The main goal was synthesis of new structures and above all, their sucessfull transfer to industrial applications. The production, which is already protected by patent, is optimised and will enable more rational and effective production of new materials. Due to the interesting physical properties, the materials could be potentialy used for lubrication, nanoelectronics, emitters, even gas nanosensors. Eminent slovenian companies have already showh interest for collaboration and within the project, preparation and characterization of test samples will be performed. Apart from Mo6, a new spin-off company NANOTUL d.o.o. is already in formation as paft of the Technology Park, Ljubljana. New materials and matter increase the competitiveness in key segments of Slovene industry. in general, novel nanostructures based on transition could be of key importance for the development of industry in larger segments from composites to electronics. Research within this project will contribute significantly to development in nanotechnology in Slovenia and thus strengthen the competitive position of our country in the world. This is a great opportunity to use the existing equipment and obtained knowledge for optimising preparation procedures of unique and higly interesting samples. Besides promotion of our country the new materials are a good basis for further collaborations with leading researchers from all over the world, especially the EU, japan, China and the US. The combination of synthesis of new structures and precise characterisation of their physical properties will also provide excellent working conditions and will be used for training of perspective researchers.
