Abstract
Polyester, with the world-wide production of approximately 10.5 millions tons per year, is the dominating man-made fiber type. The parameters of heat setting have a great influence on the molecular fiber structure. The textile industry in Slovenia is forced to buy a cheap polyester to be competitive on the market. Because of the oligomer migration to the fiber surface such a cheap material causes many problems during processing of polyester fibers. One example of this is HT dyeing of polyester fibers. The cyclic trimer shows up as a white dust. During dyeing process oligomer deposition occurs on the surface of the textile material or on the parts of the dyeing machines. Such a polyester also causes dusting of oligomers during rewinding. The dye producers are using alkaline dyeing of polyester to reduce the problems caused by oligomers. Preliminary research has shown that there is not enough disperse dyes stable in alkaline media and this is the reason that polyester is still dyed mainly under acid conditions. Therefore we have tried to reduce the problems caused by oligomers with alkaline pretreatment before acid HT dyeing. This method is patented. It is known that oligomer migration to the fiber surface depends on parameters of heat setting and therefore is sensible to research these parameters. Many researches related to the different heat set polyester fibers, but nobody has investigated the quantity of oligomers and their composition after each thermal treatment during processing of polyester fibers. The objective of our work is to evaluate the influence of temperature and time of heat setting of polyester in restricted and unrestricted state on the quantity of oligomers after thermal treatment and after acid HT dyeing.
