Abstract
Official coordinate system in Slovenia are horizontal astrogeodetic network (AGM) and precise levelling network (NVN) respectively. The inherent errors and distorsions in the astrogeodetic network of Slovenia make it unsuitable for today's requirements which not only include national mapping and cadastral purposes, but also scientific and safety purpose such as earthquake prediction, crustal dynamics and land subsidence.
Geographical Information Systems and digitised cartographic databases require a reference system of appropriate quality.
Now, with the advent of GPS technology, it is becoming of increasing importance that control networks (horizontal and vertical) are realised in terms of a stable and consistent coordinate frame which is of a global nature.
European countries are developing up-to-date reference system named ESRS (European Spatial Reference System), based on ETRS (European Terrestrial Reference System 1989) and EVRS (European Vertical Reference System). For the practical use of these systems is neccessary to connect those reference systems with slovenian official coordinate systems. For this reason we must know the condition of our coordinate systems and optimal transformation procedure.
In all its aspects Slovenia should adopt new, modern coordinate system, which could be used not only in surveying and mapping but in all related geosciences i.e. whereever location of a point in threedimensional even fourdimensional (considering time) space is needed.
