Abstract
The research programme contains basic research complexes, which refer to emigration from the Slovene ethnic territory and to immigration to foreign countries, to the life and work of emigrants in the new surroundings including integration and assimilation, to contacts between the old and the new homeland. The subject of the researches are beside the emigrants their descendants and returned emigrants. Part of the programme is studying immigration into Slovene ethnic territory. It captures all periods of migration processes with a stress on researching national identity among Slovenes around the world. Geographically the research is in the frame of the programme focused on emigrants and their descendants in Europe, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Africa. Smaller groups or individuals in other parts of the world are not neglected. The interdisciplinary approach, which is enabled by the structure of the research programme group, is the most appropriate for studying migration processes, which are from the point of view of fewness of the Slovene nation an important research complex in the frame of the research field of humanities and sociology. The scientific results of the researches can serve as a basis for forming the policy of the State towards Slovenes and their descendants around the world. From the point of view of historiography, sociology, literary science, ethnology and anthropology special attention is focused on theoretical bases – always in comparison with universal streams in researching migration processes. Special attention is given to the problematic of small groups and individuals that reveal to us many a specificity of the general migration phenomena. Most attention is from the point of view of individual sciences assigned to researches into the specific phenomena of migrations in the past, particularly in European space, connections between the old and the new homeland, resocialisation, acculturation, assimilation, autobiographic and anthropological researches, analysis of the cultural and art creativity and other activities among emigrants in the widest meaning of the word etc. In parallel great attention is given to preservation, presentation and analysis of the emigrant cultural heritage at home and among emigrants. A major part of the researches is based upon the materials acquired from the immigrant surroundings from around the world as a result of field work, interviews, researches in foreign archives, museums, libraries, and least but not last, on connections with documentary collections in foreign migration institutes.
The significance of the research programme for science in a wider (universal) sense:
The programme is comparable and is also incorporated in contemporary universal research programmes from the field of migrations. With the formation of the state of Slovenia the interest in the past and contemporary Slovene emigration has increased in all immigrant countries, and from the comparative point of view elsewhere as well, for example in the Scandinavian countries. With this programme the Institute for Slovene Migration Studies at ZRC SAZU is incorporated in universal programmes (ANAMI, AEMI and others). The basic research problems are being checked up together with foreign researchers from related fields at numerous scientific symposiums, round tables and seminars, at home and abroad. The results are being published simultaneously in Slovene and foreign scientific magazines, many of them in the Institute’s magazine Dve domovini/Two Homelands. Because of smallness of the share of Slovene emigrants around the world the research in Slovenia is of exceptional importance as well as mediating the results to foreign interested scientists as large foreign institutes and researchers do not deal with the mentioned problematic.
