Abstract
The research program consists of the analysis and evaluation of everyday activities, practices, value orientations, motivations and reflexivity, and of institutions that belong to the micro-spheres of everyday life. In our analyses we focus on different perceptions of reality as developed by various groups, and on the shaping of identity, life styles and practices. Our interests further include the relation between private and public dimensions of everyday life. Schematically speaking, the research program comprises:
- the study of specific everyday practices: the structure and function of leisure, consumer practices and styles, sexual behavior, eating habits, obsession with body and image;
- the study of specific population groups: youths, women, people with special needs;
- the study of changes in life courses: changes in the process of growing up, the transition from youth into adulthood, aging.
We place special emphasis on the study of specific social groups in Slovenia, namely:
- youth studies: the characteristics and changes in the process of growing up at the turn of the 21st century, the shaping of and changes in the meaning of youth and young people, the changes in value orientations and life styles of young people; social and political situation of young people; the factors that influence social inclusion/exclusion (marginalization) of young people, young people and family;
- women and gender studies: gender differences during the process of growing up, the position of women in the public and private spheres, the factors that influence social subordination of women;
- studies of elderly population: psycho-social effects of the changes in life cycles (higher life-expectancy) and the changing patterns of demographic structure in Slovenia, the analysis of the living conditions of elderly generation, the development of the models of ""caring society"".
Our methodological approach combines fundamental theoretical and empirical studies of the representative samples of target populations that have been going on ever since the beginning of the 1990s. The middle-range studies including social and psychological studies and the study of everyday life have undoubtedly become the central themes of social psychology and sociology in the last decade. In support of this let us mention just the abundance of works on a world scale dealing with these subjects and the emergence of sub-disciplines and new methodologies in this field.
The keen interest in our studies of the Slovenian public, including national institutions, the media, educational institutions and lay people, proves that our research subjects and groups are topical social themes. The findings of our research influenced certain policies such as youth, family and women policies. We achieved the sensibilization of the interest of the political and professional public and lay people. Our findings about changes in the process of growing up, in value orientations and life styles characterizing transitional processes proved to be of wider, international interest.
Our research topics are supported by international political institutions like European Council. The findings of our research have been regularly published in Juventa series of publications (four books during the past decade). The research program is the basis for the post-graduate course entitled ""The sociology of everyday life"" introduced in 1999 at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana.
