Abstract
Energy engineering group:
- Combustion, flue gases and surroundings
- Properties of domestic coals (interdependence of fuel composition, combustible, moisture and incombustible content)
- Improvement of biomass combution (gradual combustion, distributed air supply)
- Turbines
- Gas and steam power cycles
- Alternative power cycles
- Cogeneration of heat and power
- Operating reliability of power plants
Water turbine engines group:
- Improvement of water turbine geometry using numerical and experimental modelling
- Optimization of various aero and hydrodinamic processes in industry
Heat piston engines group:
- Improvement of reciprocating engine cooling system in areas with highest thermal load (heat transfer in cylinders and cylinder heads)
- Supercharged internal combustion engines (analysis and distribution of exhaust gas energy for driving turbocharger) under steady and nonsteady running conditions; numerial and experimental modelling)
Work engines and technical acoustic group:
- Noise generation mechanisms in centrifugal and axial pumps, compressors and fans (effect of geometry, transient regimes, surge point, cavitation phenomena)
All goups:
- Rational energy consumption in industry and traffic
- Cooperation with governmental institutions in introducing of European regulations and standards in the field of energy transforming machines and systems
Significance of research programme for science in global aspect:
Energy engineering group:
- Radial centrifugal turbines are not extensively researched yet dispite their importance for hydrodynamic torque converters
- New discoveries and improvements are expected in exploiting low quality coals as well as in finding energetically and ecologically more successfull energy conversion technologies
Water turbine engines group:
- Research is linked with those at Turboinstitut and via the institute it also participates in international projects Copernicus I and II as well as Cost Programme, 5-frame work project
Heat piston engines group:
- Locally intensive and nonuniform heat transfer in laminar flow of oil in curved ducts around cylinder is presently not fully researched in the world. The research will lead to simplified construction of piston engine cooling systems
Work engines and technical acoustic group:
- Contribution to identification of noise sources and to mechanisms of noise generation
- Algorithms for evaluation and prediction of emitted noise
Significance of research programme for Slovenia:
Energy engineering group:
- Improvement of performance and more reliable operation of steam and gass turbines in Slovenian thermal power plants
- Energetically and ecologically improved combustion in steam boilters, e.g. improved efficiency of a large boiler results in large yearly saving of coal
- Improvement of wood chips combustion (50 % of Slovenia is covered with forests!)
Water turbine engines group:
- Slovenian electric utility is systematicaly renovating hydroelectric power plants (first on Drava), part of the development is based on domestic know-how
Heat piston engines group:
- Application of research results are well accepted by automotive equipment suppliers: Iskra-Avtoelektrika, Revoz, Tesnila, IGK
Work engines and technical acoustic group:
- Noise control of pumps and fans, e.g. household appliances, vacuum cleaneers, air conditioners and various industrial-ventilating systems (market advantage!)
