Abstract
In 1999 researchers, members of the Research Program continued their work on discovering regularities in the linguistic structure of individual languages from both diachronic and synchronic aspect, accent being placed on the Slovene language structure in a comparative perspective. Investigation of the selected aspects of Slovene syntax within the framework of the minimalist theory of language of Noam Chomsky. The work focused on the pronominal clitic placement in imperative sentences. Two typologically interesting properties of Slovene imperatives have been investigated in greater detail, (ii) sentential negation, both contributing towards a better understanding of negative imperatives cross-linguistically. Languages whose mood systems provide their verbs with the imperative paradigm differ with respect to whether the imperative verb exhibits asyntax distinct from the indicative. The treatment of the Slovene data attempts to account for this typological difference with the difference in the morphosyntactic mood feature of the head (C*) of the complementizer phrase (CP) in the logical form in syntax. (Principal researcher: Marija Golden) The research on the field of Classical Languages focused on the particularities of the Linear B and the Mycenaean Greek; main texts were considered as to their connection to the later stages of the Greek language. The research of the text cohesion on Mycenaean Linear B tablets was continued as well as on the text features which show some degree of inconsistency (or appear to do so) regarding the text structure. In a comparative research of Word Order significant similarities and differences were revealed. (Principal researcher: Matjaž Babič) Research on sociolinguistic situation in different socio-cultural contexts continued, domains of language use were analysed in the ethnically mixed areas in Slovenia as well as in the neighbouring countries with Slovene population. In 1999, characteristics of the language contact status relationships were investigated in the ethnically mixed regions in Slovenia and in the Austrian Carinthia. Practical issues of the Slovene language policy and language planning were highlighted. Correlations between language attitudes and the first, second and foreign language acquisition were investigated in view of the new national curriculum. (Principal researcher: Albin Nećak Luek)
