Abstract
The programme is aimed at systematical solving of open questions of Earth Sciences in Slovenia. It consists of studies that contribute to reconstruction of Earth's history, to understanding of its present condition, also in the light of impact of Man's activities, and to geologically relevant planning of sustainable development.
These aims are achieved through studies of various aspects of rocks: their formation, development and destruction, and of their decomposition products, their structures and fossil content, physical and chemical properties. Considered by investigations are depositional environments of rocks, genesis of minerals (reactions under hydrothermal conditions and in oxic environments), chemical and isotopic composition (geochemical distributions and transport processes via aqueous phase), the vestiges of life (nannoplankton, diatoms, nummulites, nonvertebrate and mammal macrofauna), paleoecology of Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary ages, dynamics of karstic surfaces and relationships of karst surface phenomena to underground ones, structural relationships (detailed structural-lithologic mapping and microtectonic measurements, dynamics of neotectonic processes and development of geomechanic field through computer modeling and analysis), mineralogic processes of material synthesis and behaviour of solid, liquid and gaseous phases, inorganic and organic, in conditions of the Earth's surface (processes of geogenic and anthropogenic migration of matter in the geologic environment). In the frame of this programme, also the Dictionary of Slovenian geologic terminology is being elaborated.
The research in the technologic part of Earth Sciences is centred at problems of environment-friendly execution of underground objects for sparing the surface and reduction of harmful influences on the environment. For this are necessary studies of geologic conditions, mechanic properties and movements and failures of the rocks that are also the principal construction materials, development of waste disposal technologies and reuse of waste in construction and mining. This research is associated with sustainable underground and open-pit mining of industrial minerals, non-metals, energy resources and construction materials.
The studies are being conducted in close contact with research teams at other institutions in Slovenia and abroad. The programme is being conducted by university professors who teach these disciplines at the only Earth Science school at the university level in Slovenia. The results of mentioned research in Slovenia as the classic karst country, with its peculiar geologic structure, mineral wealth, long mining history and established scholarship promise to be of interest also for the Earth Sciences in general.
