Abstract
The research program covers the following areas: materials and metallurgy, design, synthesis and constitution of materials and their characterization and the development of technological processes. The researchers specialize in the following areas: thermodynamics and kinetics of materials, the development and characterization of microstructures, the analysis of composition and structure, phsyical metallurgy of steels and non-iron metals, metallurgical process technology, foundry, material forming, welding, powder metallurgy, heat treatment and surface engineering. The group works mostly with metals and composites with metallic matrics. The research of inorganic non-metal materials and certain fields of polymer materials are also productive, particulary where the experimental methods are similar or identical to those methods used with metals. Special emphasis is placed on mathematical and physical modeling, especially for the purpose of metal forming, foundry, heat transfer and heat treatment. The experimental equipment enables complex analysis in the fields of thermal and thermomechanical analysis, microstructure characterization, constructionb of phase diagrams, measurment of mechanical properties and the production of metallic alloys with a non-equilibrium microstructure. The results are successfully applied to the metal machining, mechanical and metallurgical industries. The group is also involved in a number of European projects in the fields of thermomechanical treatment and forming of materials, durability of tools , foundry and high temperature and mechanical behaviour of materials. Both undergraduate and graduate students participate in the research. The research has resulted in articles published over past years in scientific literature which covered topics concerning the construction of metal alloys, high temperature reactions between the solid alloys and the atmosphere, the mechanics of materials and the failure analysis. Most of the articles achieved a high degree of recognition. The group has appropriate equipment for the approved fields of interest, which will become optimal when a SEM and some additional thermal analysis equipment is acquired.
