Abstract
The basic activity within the research program is the development and application of new instrumental and other experimental methods for measurements and investigations of phenomena in the environment. The emphasis is on optical methods such as laser spectroscopy, which are combined with some specific methods like biosensors and classical separation techniques (liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis). Among laser-based techniques the optothermal methods (photoacoustic spectroscopy, thermal lens spectrometry and photothermal beam deflection spectrometry), laser excited fluorescence and LIDAR will be most extensively used. New ultra-fast laser spectroscopic techniques will be introduced for studies of intermediates in photochemical reactions. The newly developed experimental methods will be applied for investigations of processes related to photochemical and biological degradation of organic pollutants in the environment. In addition to determination of pollutants in the environment, our research will be devoted to studies of fundamental processes (kinetics, mechanisms, stability, interactions with sediments, bioaccumulation) in laboratory conditions. Initially, the toxic compounds such as pesticides and their degradation products, and halogenated hydrocarbons and their precursors (humic substances) will be investigated. Methods based on biosensors, which enable direct estimation of toxicity of reaction by-products will be applied to monitor the efficiency of photochemical and biochemical degradation of pesticides. In addition to toxic compounds, some biologically active substances (carotenoids, flavonoids) will be subject of our investigations, since they can be used as indicators of the physiological status of organisms, the quality and authenticity of food products as well as the indicators of sources of water pollution. Methods which enable remote sensing will be used in investigations of atmospheric pollution and pollution of waters.
