Abstract
The research programme comprises the following main goals:
-preserving the Slovenian forests and their biotic variety, and sustain and develop their ecological, social and economic functions,
-preserving a healthy environment and seeking an ecological balance between forest management and other uses of the natural environment,
-optimum exploitation of the forests'' natural sites and other potentials,
-developing an environment-friendly and human technology of wood production,
-preserving the population density of cultivated land, and enhancing living conditions in the countryside.
Therefore, the research programme carried out by the Forest and Renewable Resources Management research group focuses on the following research goals:
-gaining knowledge of forest ecosystems in Slovenia,
-gaining knowledge of the significant frameworks for the various functions of a co-natural, multifunctional forest and its ecosystem parts,
-researching the factors for biotic variety and stability of the forests,
-gaining knowledge of how a forest reacts to different kinds of pollution and disturbance, and researching existing and anticipated kinds of pollution generated by human and social needs ultimately having an impact on the forests or on its constituent elements,
-finding ways of efficiently linking the need for natural development and environmental protection with technological and economic interests, so that forests may develop in a sustainable manner, safeguarding a high quality of the environment,
-defining quality factors for the development of the forests, and the work culture in them,
-developing methods for planning, directing and harmonizing forest management, respecting the imperative of preserving nature and the historical development of the woods and of forest management,
-gaining knowledge of the woods'' significance for sustaining and developing the country.
Significance for science
Unlike in most parts of Europe, it is possible in Slovenia to implement and to successfully conclude such research programmes thanks to the fact that the Slovenian forests have been able to preserve their biotic variety, and to the long-standing tradition of co-naturally managing the forests'' ecosystems. The new findings can thus be used for practical work strategies. Owing to this, we expect the results of the research programme, in its planned framework, to exceed the borders of the Slovenian state, thus making a potentially important contribution to the world-wide basis of knowledge. In the past, our findings have been verified by JRO members in the framework of scientific meetings, held in the sections of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Deutscher Verband forstlicher Forschungsanstalten, the International Union of Wildlife Biologists (IUGB), the IUCN European Wolf Network, the WWF – a Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe, etc.
Significance for the country
The results of the research work shall contribute to attaining the goals of the national economy and of environmental protection, with special emphasis on the following:
