Abstract
he project Media, Populism, and Political Stability in the European Union (MEDIAPOP) examines the development in politics and media in the European context. It assumes that the rise of populism in Europe is a reaction to anomalies and (unintended) consequences of globalization, as well as a symptom of the crisis in established politics and its shortcomings, both at the national and European levels. Additionally, the spread of populist messages is linked to profound changes facing the media landscape, particularly the crisis of traditional media and journalism. The attractiveness of populism is significantly contributed to by the commercialization and tabloidization of media on one hand, and the mediatization of politics on the other. Populists utilize various media channels, often serving the dissemination of misinformation.
The maintenance, strengthening, and legitimization of European democracy require improving institutional efficiency in terms of problem-solving capacity, responsiveness, and accountability to citizens. Furthermore, it presupposes the construction of a European identity. These challenges will be analyzed through open education, public debates, research, and recommendations for policymakers and other stakeholders. We will emphasize the need for revitalizing European democracy through a combination of participatory and representative aspects with an active role for citizens, as well as free and professional media, thus making populist claims less attractive.
MEDIAPOP includes three subjects (Challenges of Contemporary Society; European Values and Identity; Media, Globalization, and Culture) and summer schools that will address issues of media, populism, and European democracy.
