Abstract
The study will include newborns with early onset neonatal encephalopathy according to the criteria of aTask Force set up by the World Federation of Neurology Group for the prevention of cerebral palsy and related neurological disorders. During the first week of lifre the follwing investigations will be added to the standard ones: clinical neurological examination (estimation by Sarnat et Sarnat), biochemical (protein S-100, NSE, antioxidant status, ratio of hypoxanthine/creatinine and selenium/creatinine), neurophysological (serial EEG, continuos functional monitoring - CFM of cerebral activity, visual evoked potentials-VEP) and neuroradiological (ultrasound, doppler, localized CT head, MRI and /or spectroscopy of brain) as well as follow-up (videoestimation of general movements, neurological and developmental examination, digital EEG, evoked potentials, psychological tests). A follow-up during infantile and early childhood period will include also investigations to rule out possible higher psychological function defect, cognitive dysfunction and/or associated sleep disturbance (neuropsychological testing, cognitive evoked potentials, actimetry, continous cardio-respiratory function monitoring, sleep chart and/or urinary melatonin estimation.
