Abstract
This research programme is a set of interdisciplinary research that examines the broad fields of folkloristics and ethnology, connecting it to the new concepts and discourses from various humanistic sciences. It is divided to interconnected research topics, which continue with the research of the past programme while it also adds new content: A1 Folk and arts, intertextuality and performativity in folk drama and theatre; zoo and botany phenomena in folklore, literature and culture, A2 Surviving with a song, creating tradition,A3 Folk in the written code, A4 Music and identity processes, A5 Ethno-identity dances in Slovenia, B Folk music practices in audio recordings, C Cognitive and perceptive perspectives: emotional perception and semantics of folklore and ethnomusicological heritage in users and on carriers. They present the basis for scientific research, stipulating that folkloristic and ethnological research of Slovenian spiritual culture deals with the issues of creative and functional communication of the folk spiritual traditions, their textures, texts, context and barriers. The individual aspects are interdisciplinary and examine the social elements of spiritual culture and determine the differences as well as the similarities in structure, function and poetry, in the historical context, while it also takes into account the traditions changing due to new social circumstances, new cultural dynamics and transformations of cultural practices. Folkloristic hypothesis that the elements of the folk spiritual culture are some of the clearest indicators of ethnic characteristics converge with the ethnological aspects that determine how these elements are affected by the barriers and the social context in which they are realised. The core of the research includes systematic research of the broadest area of folk spiritual culture and its creative transformation based on field research, and critical approach to sources, systematization, digitalisation of the field and archive material. We are combining diachronic research of folk spiritual culture with synchronic research, which enables us to observe, first, innovations and modern phenomena that is only becoming a tradition, or invented tradition, especially the genres that have been overlooked and belong in the area of intertextuality and performativity; furthermore, song traditions that enable survival, issues arising from the creativity in folk in written code, music and dance in identity processes and the issue of folk music practices on audio carriers. We plan to connect further with the research from the field of cognitive science that connects humanistic and cognitive sciences with innovative technologies and methods from the field of information technology in order to determine general patterns and specifics of understanding folk song and music and to continue with the examination of connections between ecology and folklore, culture, literature (ethnobotany) and to establish a new discipline of zoofolkloristics in the European area with the help of cultural and critical animalistics and ecocriticism.
Significance for science
The findings of different research works will be applied to other research areas within ethnomusicological, sociological, ethnological, folkloristic, anthropologic and other sciences. The collected audio and visual material will make it possible for other sciences and aspects to examine individual phenomena. The research of various folk-cultural phenomena that will take into account international research and similar tradition practices will contribute significantly to the placement of segments of Slovenian folk heritage in the Eropean as well as broader cultural space. New dimensions will present themselves through the research of the overlooked or scarcely researched song genres, codes, performativity, multilingual intertwining of folk music practices connected to the identity processes as reflected in songs, and through ethno-identity forms of dance. The research will generate new aspects of research, such as ethical and ideological, develop new, innovative directions e.g. cognitive and scientific perspectives on the understanding of folklore, it will contribute to the understanding of the global phenomenon dealing with the folk music practices on carriers and with digital folkloristics in general, also in connection with cognitive science. The proposed research introduces innovative scientific research methodology, which is based on mutual interdependence of folkloristic and ethnomusicological research and research from the field of modern information-communication technologies. At the same time it includes concepts and discourses from various humanistic sciences (e.g. anthropology, sociology, archaeology, critical animalistics and others). The proposed research is therefore intrinsically specific and innovative: specific in its examination of inner workings or of the laws of Slovenian folk song, music and dance and of Slovenian spiritual culture in general; innovative in its approach and integration of different research areas. Based on the proposed research the scientific field of ethnomusicology will be enriched with new insights and approaches to the research of the Slovenian folk spiritual culture and its creative transformations and communications. The material and analyses will provide other humanistic and sociological sciences in Slovenia and abroad with the bases for essential comparative studies and with the theoretical methodological platform for research programmes. Publishing the findings of the research in foreign journals and publications will ensure its integration into the current European and global scientific frameworks.
Significance for the country
The programme combines a complex of research that is key for the recognition of Slovenia in European and global integrations, as it represents the part of cultural heritage of the Slovenian nation that is the most original and autonomous. It derives from folk spiritual culture that, both in the past as well as today, has shed light on the part that is the most intrinsic to the Slovenian national and cultural identity and paramount in the establishment of the specifics of Slovenian culture within European and global culture. Indeed, it is this set of research of folk spiritual culture that offers a possibility to understand not only different cultures but also their inner logic (thought, philosophy structure), the understanding of which is essential for a successful start and continuation of international dialogue and cohabitation. The research into the connectivity of social environment and song traditions, together with their carriers, can be essential also for the understanding of socio-economic and cultural changes and survival strategies as well as of the new findings in the field of ecology and ethics through folklore, literature and culture occurring with the so called ontological turn in science. Significant indirect benefits for the general public, e.g. promotion of the country: publications of new compact discs; material played and presented at international scientific symposiums and universities abroad; within the framework of intercultural and interethnic co-operation; access to knowledge from abroad; organisation of international symposiums; publishing articles and translations in international scientific publications; theoretical and practical work done in the area of vocal and instrumental folk music (workshops, seminars, lectures). Significant direct benefits for the development of culture: presentations of folk music heritage for example in the form of an evening of music (Zajuckaj in zapoj) broadcast on the radio and television programmes, professional and popular magazines, publications of compact discs containing archive recordings and accompanying scientific text; providing archive music material for educational purposes; providing archive music material for further arrangements to enable the proliferation and preservation of heritage. The research will help form programme politics of the national institution covering amateur cultural activities (Republic of Slovenia Public Fund for Cultural Activities), as some members of the research group co-operate with it in various roles such as expert adviser, selectors and strategists. Similarly, we will be able to exert some influence as members of different associations (Slovene Ethnological Society, Slovenian Musicological Society, Cultural and Ethnomusicological Society Folk Slovenia, Glasbena matica Ljubljana). Furthermore, we can influence the promotion and development of cultural activities and cultural heritage by taking part in the entry of elements into the register of nonmaterial cultural heritage held at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO. The proposed research is also the continuation of the efforts of the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the Research Centre of Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts to archive, document and digitalise and consequently preserve numerous collections on digital media. In this way we can better safeguard our cultural heritage, increase its availability, improve general awareness and knowledge of our heritage, which is made possible through the multimedia digital archives EtnoMuza and Etnokatalog, as well as the website KlikvDomovino and mobile application Etnofletno. Establishing archives of digital multimedia content is an important aspect in the informatisation of society and is significant for the proliferation of knowledge of cultural heritage.
