Abstract
TermFrame: Terminology and Knowledge Frames across Languages
This project is about terminology and knowledge at the intersection of languages, cognition and computer science. We explore the notion that concepts and cognitive structures are not universal or static, but rather fluid, dynamic and dependent on many factors including context, language and culture. Our main objective is to investigate the conceptual structures in the domain of karst science in three languages, English, Slovene and Croatian, and from two complementary perspectives, the linguistic one and the computational.
Our work plan comprises the compilation and annotation of a trilingual specialised corpus, the extraction of knowledge in the form of terms, definitions and relations, detailed semantic analyses and comparisons across languages, genres and contexts, development of an innovative web infrastructure for processing and representing domain-specific knowledge through advanced visualisations, and finally the creation of the TermFrame knowledge base for karstology. The TermFrame infrastructure and knowledge base will provide a new form of terminological description and presentation by highlighting language- and/or culture-specific elements in the conceptual structuring of the domain. Furthermore, the project will yield a new terminological resource for the field of karstology which will facilitate translation, tourism, research, teaching and karst exploration.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration between linguists and information scientists a new understanding of the cognitive frames underlying knowledge will be gained. We expect to find evidence for the culture-, language- and context-dependence of knowledge structures, which may influence terminology and terminography and the way specialised knowledge is represented in reference works.
The above findings are highly relevant for translation or any intercultural communication, especially in specialised communicative settings.
New modalities of knowledge representation shall be developed and evaluated by users, which is relevant for science per se and could influence the way specialised domains are modeled. The relevance if these findings is important for information science in that traditional ontologies and semantic lexicons will need to accommodate the fact that knowledge structures are not universal and that the cultural dynamics plays an important role in knowledge extraction and modeling.
The TermFrame infrastructure will represent an important resource for the domain of karst science and at the same time a model for a new terminological description. It will be easily portable to other domains and could influence the production of reference works in future.
