Abstract
The quality and composition of coals have essential influence on operating performances, heat losses, th own use of the power, efficiency, and also vear out of boilers and other installations in industry and first of all in power plants. The most influential factors are: heating value, theoretical temperature of combustion, the quantity and composition of ash, the moisture content, the quantity of sulphur, xilit and volatiles in the coal. The main research topics of the project with the title The Improvement of Fuels Consumption in Steam boilers are identification of influence of the coal composition on the power performances of power plants, the ecological acceptability, the life extension, and operation reliability of boilers ant units in power plants. The theoretical researching will be supported by thermal power testing and measurements on boilers and power plant units. On the basis of the theoretical results and results gained by experiments and measureents on the installations we expect to gain the relieble data on the base of which the requirements and suggestions for reduction of the specific own power consumption, reduction of heat losses, reduction of harmful emissions, the reduction of damages on the installations and improvement of the reliability for all power plant units in Slovenia can be elaborated. There is also the new sphere of activity - the selection of foreign coals that can bi used as a subtitutional fuel in the boilers of slovenian coals with low heating values, high content of ash, water and sulphur. Without new knowledges on this research domain the well-founded arguments and decissions will difficult be carry out.
