Abstract
The assessment of diagnosis and prognostic factors in soft tissue tumors has always been complex, variable and somewhat subjective due to lack of agreed upon standards. The purpose of this study is to analyze the features of soft tissue sarcomas by low-tech morphologic and high-tech cytometric methods to assess their intratumoral variability and their changes during the course of disease, i.e., in locally recurrent and/or metastatic tumors. In a long-term follow-up series of patients with soft tissue sarcomas, we will ivestigate in detail histologic and immunohistochemical as well as flow and image cytometric characteristics of surgically removed tumor tissue. We will evaluate clinico-pathologic correlations and, using univatiate and multivariate analyses, correlate the data with patients’s outcome. We expect that this study will identify acceptable key parameters to help in establishing specific diagnosis of these tumors and to increase the accuracy in the prediction of their clinical behaviour.
