Abstract
The professional literature on adult education contains a fair amount of adult education descriptions from the more narrower points of view. There are, however, not enough attempts to create an independent and comprehensive theory and philosophy of adult education or at least a theoretical synthesis of the research results already obtained. This makes it practically impossible to make a definition of the adult education system or to conceive adult education as a relatively authonomous field in the overall system of education and lifelong learning. The establishment of the concepts and strategies of lifelong, lifewide, global, and other, modern systems of learning threatens to stifle adult education before it has had a chance to get established a an authonomous discipline or system; and in-depth scientific discussion about the philosophy and theory of adult education has not even begun. The present research is a continuation of our research project Outstanding Experts on Adult Education, where the statements of 85 world-wide most prominent experts on adult education about the basic conceptual issues of adult education and its systemic organization have been presented. The present three years (1997-1999) project will comprise the following contents and parts: - a further in-depth theoretical analysis of the presented problems, with inclusion of the new sources and insights; - compilation of replies to the issues presented on a larger sample of participants; - confrontation of the sinthesized statements from the different points of view; - case studies of selected countries. We expect to work out a theoretically well-founded and empirically substantiated scheeme of the science of adult education, presented as an integral part of the (meta)theory or science of education and of the overall macrosystem of science, including all the elements to be found in a definition of science: logos (science), episteme (discipline), tehne (profession), pragma (doctrine) and praxis (area), in relation to all aspects of reality: nature, man and society. We will take such a scheeme as a basis for a definition of the present system of adult education and for the rethinking and re-conceiving it.
