Description
The keeping and safeguarding of archives in the history mainly depend from various systems and society and political will that governed in some time and space. In the area that is competent to the Regional Archives of Maribor were many institutions and societies that collected archives and then kept them. Firstly was this mission systematically carried out by Joaneum in Gradec from the beginning of 19 th century. In second half of 19 th century had on the development of archival activities in Maribor area directly influenced the changing of the residence of the diocese from St. Andraž to Maribor. After removal of the archival documents to Maribor was made also the base of the collection of the archives, pointed out by diocesan museum and German musean society. Besides those two institutions operated still Styrian regional archives in Graz from 1868, that was till 1918 competent to Slovenian Styria. In Prekmurje the documents were collected by the archives in Zalaegerszeg for Zala mayoralty and Szombathely for Železna županija mayoralty. For Carinthia's area was from 1904 till 1918 was competent Carinthian regional archives in Celovec. First material and contenting base of today Regional Archives of Maribor is represented by archives that was collected by striving members of Historic Society for Slovenian Štajer. The ideas of the foundation of independent archival institution in Maribor are extended to the time after the finish of first world war and made a model according to the context of the demands on getting the archives of Slovenian language and provenience that are kept in the archives abroad. The formal foundation of the archives in Maribor was the year 1929, but early then was Maribor authority canceled. Historic Society continued the efforts to foundation of the archives. The mainly part is the employment of Franjo Baš for the archivist in the year 1932. With the reception of the regulations was founded on 20 April 1933 the Banovinski arhiv in Maribor. During second world war the archives was only as the department of the museum and was a newly founded after the second world war in the year 1952 as Državni arhiv LRS-branch office Maribor. In 1963, a little before the acceptance of first archival law, the institution got today name: Regional Archives of Maribor. In 1981 the Law of natural and cultural heritage brought the novelties to professional work and on the activity of the archives was made the financial simplification through Cultural community of Slovenia. The rights that were given to the archives, took in 1997 the government of Republic Slovenia.
