Purpose of equipment
DT1200 made by Dispersion Technology Inc. is a combined acoustic and electroacoustic spectrometer for characterization of particle size and zeta potential of dispersions and emulsions. Particle size determination is based on measurements of ultrasound attenuation in the sample at different frequencies. Ultrasound attenuation spectrum is defined by the sample’s properties and serves as the basis for calculation of its particle size distribution. Zeta potential is determined by measuring colloid vibration current that results from displacement of electrical double-layers of charged particles under the influence of ultrasound. With acoustic spectroscopy it is generally unnecessary to dilute or modify the sample which allows for characterization of real concentrated and opaque dispersions and emulsions.
